Agentic tasks

Tasks where an AI agent operates autonomously to achieve a goal, making decisions and taking actions.
Agentic tasks are jobs an AI system can do completely on its own. Instead of just following direct commands, the AI figures out the steps needed to reach a final goal. It can make its own decisions along the way.
Think of asking an AI to plan a trip. An agentic AI wouldn't just list flights. It would research destinations, book hotels, create an itinerary, and adjust if flights change, all without constant human input.
Agentic tasks involve AI systems that can autonomously plan, reason, and execute a series of actions to achieve a defined objective. These systems go beyond simple instruction following by exhibiting goal-directed behavior, which may include self-correction, resource management, and interaction with external environments or tools. The complexity can range from multi-step data analysis to long-horizon problem-solving.
Key aspects include the AI's ability to decompose a high-level goal into sub-tasks, select appropriate tools or methods, and adapt its strategy based on intermediate results or unforeseen circumstances. This contrasts with traditional AI applications that require explicit step-by-step human guidance for each action.
Frontier AI labs are focusing on agentic tasks as they develop more capable AI models. These models are designed to operate more autonomously, planning and executing actions to achieve user goals. This shift is evident in new model releases and infrastructure investments aimed at supporting more complex AI operations.

The concept of agentic tasks emerged from research in artificial intelligence, particularly in areas like intelligent agents, autonomous systems, and reinforcement learning. It describes AI systems designed to act independently in complex environments to achieve goals.
Ask an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot to 'plan a weekend trip to a national park for two people, including travel, lodging, and activities.' Observe how it generates an itinerary, suggests options, and potentially asks clarifying questions to complete the task autonomously.

Questions people ask
- What is the difference between an agentic task and a regular AI task?
- Regular AI tasks usually require specific instructions for each step. Agentic tasks allow the AI to figure out the steps itself to reach a broader goal.
- Do agentic tasks require human supervision?
- While humans set the initial goal, agentic tasks are designed to be completed with minimal or no step-by-step human supervision. The AI manages the process autonomously.
