Improve LLM factual recall by enabling reasoning traces
Enable reasoning traces in LLMs to improve recall of simple, single-hop factual questions.
Allow the LLM to generate reasoning traces (chain-of-thought). This provides a computational buffer and primes related facts, unlocking otherwise unreachable answers.
LLM fails to recall simple, single-hop facts that are encoded in its parametric knowledge.
The model's direct recall mechanism is insufficient for certain facts, even when no complex reasoning is needed.
If an LLM struggles to recall simple facts, enabling its reasoning capabilities can help. Generating reasoning traces acts as a computational buffer and primes related information, improving the model's ability to access its stored knowledge.
Reasoning traces provide additional computational steps and surface related facts, which primes the model to recall the correct answer from its parametric memory.
When the task is not about factual recall or when computational resources are extremely limited.
