Reasoning aids LLM recall of simple facts via computation and priming
Reasoning helps LLMs recall simple facts by acting as a computational buffer and priming related information.
Reasoning enhances LLM recall of simple, single-hop factual questions.
This occurs through two mechanisms: 1) generated reasoning tokens act as a computational buffer, allowing additional processing time to refine the model's internal state and fetch hard-to-reach facts. 2) Generating related facts primes the model, similar to spreading activation in human memory, making correct answers easier to retrieve.
When asked a simple factual question, an LLM that generates a reasoning trace, even a nonsensical one, can improve its ability to recall the correct answer compared to not generating a trace.
Reasoning, even for simple facts, improves LLM recall. This is driven by using generated reasoning tokens as a computational buffer for latent processing and by generating related facts to prime the correct answer. This helps models access knowledge encoded in their weights.
Generated reasoning tokens provide additional computational steps, allowing the model to refine its internal state and access difficult-to-retrieve parametric knowledge. Generating related facts primes the model's semantic memory, making correct answers more accessible.
