Transformer models

Also written: Transformer architecture

Transformer models are AI architectures using self-attention to process sequential data, forming the basis for many large language models.

In plain terms

Transformer models are a type of AI design that has become very popular for understanding and generating human-like text. They work by looking at all the words in a sentence at once and figuring out how they relate to each other. This helps them understand context much better than older AI systems.

For example, if you give a transformer model the sentence "The animal didn't cross the street because it was too tired," it can figure out that "it" refers to the "animal" and not the "street." This ability to grasp relationships between words, even if they are far apart, is key to their success in tasks like translation, summarization, and writing.

The expert version

Transformer models are a class of neural network architectures based on the self-attention mechanism. Introduced in "Attention Is All You Need," they process input sequences by calculating attention scores between all pairs of elements, allowing them to weigh the importance of different parts of the input for each output element. This parallelizable approach, unlike recurrent neural networks (RNNs), enables efficient training on long sequences and has become the de facto standard for state-of-the-art natural language processing tasks, including large language models.

Why it matters now

Transformer models are central to the latest advancements in AI, particularly in how they handle complex data like text and images. Recent research highlights unexpected capabilities emerging from these models, driving further investigation into their potential and limitations.

Questions people ask

What makes transformers different from older AI models?
Transformers use a mechanism called self-attention, which allows them to weigh the importance of different words in a sentence simultaneously, leading to better context understanding than older sequential models like RNNs.
Are all AI language models transformers?
While many modern large language models are based on transformer architectures, not all AI models use transformers. Other architectures exist for different types of tasks.
